EXCLUSIVE: STATE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS GONZALO LIRA IS DEAD
After sending several email to the State Department and the White House over the weekend, the State Department has confirmed to me that Gonzalo Lira is dead.
In an email, the State Department says:
”We can confirm the death of U.S. citizen Gonzalo Lira in Ukraine.
We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss.
We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance.
Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment. “
Now I have repeatedly asked the State Department if they’ve reached out to the Ukrainian government after Lira was detained. They will are refusing to provide me with any specific details.
The State Department only offered me this response in regards to that question:
“We take our role in assisting U.S. citizens abroad seriously and provide all appropriate assistance.
Our assistance may include visiting with a detained citizen, facilitating communication on the citizen's needs and well-being, and engaging with local government authorities, including on matters related to providing appropriate health care.
We refer further questions on detention and medical care to the respective Ukrainian authorities.
We do not release details about our assistance to U.S. citizens out of respect for their privacy.”
